March’s Soup and a Song

Jamestown’s St. Susan Center will continue the monthly “Soup and a Song” series of programs combining concerts by popular local musical groups with an “open-mic” on Friday, March 16th. For the modest admission price of $10, attendees will be treated to an evening of fine live musical entertainment and a meal consisting of hearty soup, several varieties of breads, crackers, desserts, coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

Proceeds from the Soup and a Song series will benefit St. Susan Center, Jamestown’s soup kitchen, which in 2011 served over 95,000 meals to a diverse client base that extends beyond the unemployed and homeless to include young parents, teens, seniors, children and persons who are challenged physically, mentally or emotionally.

“The demands on St. Susan Center are greater than ever. During the month of February we served 24% more meals than the previous year.,” explained Sue Colwell, executive director. “ I am extremely thankful for the support of our community; we could not make it without you!”

Logistical support for the Soup and a Song program is being provided by Trinity Guitars, the Jamestown-based purveyor of fine stringed instruments and audio gear. Trinity Guitars owner, Jim Holler, will be coordinating the talent for the events, as well as providing the sound system. WRFA’s Jason Sample will return as the Master of Ceremonies.

The Soup and a Song events will be held at St. Susan Center’s facility at Gateway Center, also known to Jamestown residents as the former Chautauqua Hardware Building, at 31 Water Street. The public will be admitted beginning at 6:00pm, with the open-mic segment of the programs beginning at 6:30. Featured entertainers will begin playing at 7:40 pm, and the events will conclude at 9:00pm.

Featured performers on the 16th is the Kidder UMC praise band, Kidder Alive. “Kidder church is committed to St. Susan Center through financial support, but this event allows us to share our talents to build up their ministry.” Said Kidder Pastor Rick LaDue. “We’ll worship, have fun and raise money for a vital need. Everybody wins!”

Trinity Guitars owner Jim Holler is pleased with the turnouts and the effectiveness of the Soup and Song Events:

“ As we close out the 2012 version of “Soup and A Song” I am thankful for all the musicians who have donated there time and talents. We have had fun, made some new friends and raised money and awareness for St Susan Center. In this addition I will pick up my guitar as part of the band Kidder Alive.”

Persons interested in learning more about St. Susan Center may contact Colwell at (716) 664-2253, extension 3. Persons interested in performing during the open-mic segments of the programs should contact Jim Holler at (716) 665-4490, or sign up in person at Trinity Guitars, 800 West Third Street in Jamestown. The open-mics will feature acoustic-based performers of folk, blues or country selections suitable for a venue such as St. Susan Center.

Grow a Salad for St. Susan Center

Garden for St SusanThroughout the United States community gardens are providing cities and towns with benefits from beautification to produce. In 2012 those who live in Jamestown and surrounding communities will have the opportunity to make a difference with a new kind of community garden known as a Giving Garden.

In a joint effort, Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play (CHP2LWP) and St. Susan Center (SSC) will be serving fresh produce to those in need. Members of the community are the most important element to the Giving Gardens 2012 project.

Any community member willing to host a Giving Garden will need only to donate time, soil and water. The remainder of growing supplies will be provided to volunteers in Giving Garden Tool Kits which include items such as seeds, seedlings, growing containers, tomato cages and garden tools. All growing containers, tomato cages and tools must be returned at the close of the growing season. “Creating Healthy Places to Live Work and Play is thrilled to be collaborating with St. Susan Center in the creation of Giving Gardens”, states Kerry Mihalko, CHP2LWP Healthy Food Consultant.

CHP2LWP is funded by the NYS Department of Health. It is focused on increasing access to healthy food and opportunities to be physically active which will help decrease obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases. “By putting reusable items in the tool kits, this program will be sustainable and provide St. Susan Center with fresh produce and community members with gardening experiences for many years”, explains Mihalko.

The yield from all the Giving Gardens will be donated to St. Susan Center where the creative cooks Evie Schroeder and Susan Cummings will create healthy, fresh dishes for those in need. Cummings explains, “The fresh produce is very appetizing. The guests like the rich flavor and color.”

There are three garden varieties for the public to choose from. These choices provide potential to take part in varying degrees of gardening expertise. The beginner kit is a container herb garden. Next is the moderate kit with the opportunity to grow tomatoes. The advanced kit is the most adventurous giving the community the chance to grow a salad for St. Susan Center. SSC hopes to serve salads and recipes full of fresh vegetables throughout the summer. During the winter the produce will make its way to SSC guests’ trays by way of freezing and canning the summer’s bounty. If you are not able to grow a garden please consider working in the SSC kitchen. We need people to assist with freezing and canning vegetables throughout the summer.

St. Susan Center serves, on average, more than 300 meals each day. Its doors are open Monday – Friday from 11am to 4pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. For more information about Giving Gardens, or to find out about volunteering, email Karen Brown (coordinator@stsusancenter.org) or call at 716-664-2253, Ext. 2. Local Business Leaders Donate to St. Susan Center

Friday Morning Networking Group

The Friday Morning Networking Group is not your average “coffee and doughnuts” breakfast meeting. Area business leaders meet on Friday mornings in the dining room at St. Susan Center to network and share ideas and desires for business growth, as well as sharing information on the activities of the communities in which they do business.

Close to 30 businesses and their leaders are represented in the networking group. They share a common vision of building trusting, long-term relationships with the ultimate goal of enhancing local business through involvement in their communities and providing business leads and opportunities for one another. The group encourages only one representative from any business category, however its membership ranges from industrial, to construction, to small retail businesses.

Recently the Friday Morning Networking Group donated $500.00 to St. Susan Center. Executive Director of St. Susan Center, Sue Colwell states that the donation was an “Unexpected Blessing!” FMNG supports St. Susan Center all year by collecting $5.00 from each member, a portion of which is donated to St. Susan’s.

Colwell is pleased with her experience with FMNG stating, “The business people that are part of FMNG have good character and great work ethic.” For local business people interested in joining the Friday Morning Networking Group please visit www.fmng.org.

Volunteer Dinner

We celebrated our wonderful volunteers at the annual volunteer dinner which was held on October 27, 2011. Wayne Quattrone was named the Volunteer of the Year. Wayne and his wife Flo are from Frewsburg NY. Senator Cathy Young was on hand to present Wayne a certificate commemorating his Volunteer of the Year award. The dining room was filled to 70 to 80 people.

We’ld like to send out a special thank you to C.A. Curtze, The Watermark Restaurant, U.S. Foods and Chautauqua Suites for donating the food for our event. And thank you to Bill VanStry and his crew for getting the food prepared and set up on the tables.

It was a wonderful night and thank you all for your continued support!
